Safety Accessories

Safety Accessories that every team should have available  Safety items are also referred to as Personal Protective Equiment.  This list shows basic Personal Protective Equipment.  It is not a comprehensive list of all Personal Protective Equipent.  Some tools that you learn to use may have special PPE that users must wear.  Make sure that you use all recommended PPE for any equipment that you operate.

Eye Protection

  • Safety Glasses are designed to protect your eyes from flying debris.  Using a saw generates sawdust and other bits of wood that fly around and can get in your eyes.  Using other tools such as hammers and drills can also generate flying debris.  DI Teams may want to consider wearing safety glasses at any time they are working with tools.  Safety glasses are available at most hardware and home improvement stores.

Hearing Protection

  • Hear protection is PPE designed to protect your ears from the loud noise that power tools generate.  There are many types of hearing protection available.  The simplist hearing protection for DI teams is foam ear plugs.  For most DI teams, ear plugs are sufficient.  Other types of hear protection similiar to ear muffs are also available.  You can purchase foam ear plugs in bulk at most home improvement centers.  Foam ear plugs are also avaiable connected in pairs by a string so that you can hang them around your neck when you remove them.  You should consider wearing ear plugs any time you are using any type of power saw or other loud equipment.

Dust Protection

  • Dust Protection safety equipment is designed to protect your lungs from dust generated when working with tools.  Wood generates sawdust but cutting other things such as PVC pipe and metal also generate dust that you can inhale.  There are many types of dust protection available but a simple paper dust mask is sufficient for DI Teams.    Dust masks should be worn any time you are cutting products like plywood, hardboard or other manufactured wood product because cutting these generates a lot of dust.  You may also want to wear a dust mask when using spray paint.

Woodworkers Safety Glove

  • Team Managers should consider purchasing woodworkers safety gloves if your team is going to be using utility knives to cut corrugated and other items.  Utility knives are very sharp and one slip can slice a finger or hand.  Woodworkers Safety Glove provide some protection from the occassional slip and may protect a finger from getting cut when the team is using a utility knife to cut things.  Woodworkers Safety Gloves are available at shops specializing in woodworking equipment such as Rockler.
